Sultan’s Qaboos bin Said al Said gift to the nation to mark the 30th year of his reign

The Grand Mosque in Muscat is built from 300.000 tonnes of Indian sandstone and took six years and four months to finish

It was inaugurated by Sultan on 4 of May 2001

The main musalla (prayer hall) can hold over 6.500 worshipers, while the women’s musalla can accommodate 750

Main minaret is 90m high and four flanking minarets 45.5m

The outer paved ground can hold 8.000 worshipers and there is additional space available in the interior courtyard and the passageways, making a total capacity of up to 20.000



The Mosque is built on 416.000 square meters







The eight-ton Swarovski crystal chandelier above the praying hall is 14 meters tall





The world’s second largest hand-woven single-piece carpet, which covers the floor of the prayer hall. It contains 1.700.000.000 knots, weighs 21 tonnes, measures over 70 × 60 meters and took 600 women four years to weave. 28 colors in varying shades were used, the majority obtained from traditional vegetable dyes.
